PSA Test and Private Prostate Blood Test in Lurgan
A PSA test is a blood test that measures prostate specific antigen, used as a prostate check for men. It is one of the simplest ways to look into urinary symptoms or to get reassurance if you are over 50. At Friends Medical the test measures both total and free PSA, and our GP goes through your result with you, because a PSA result needs a doctor to interpret it alongside your symptoms rather than being read as a single number.
What this test analyses
A standard PSA blood test to check your prostate health. It measures both total PSA and free PSA, and compares the two, which helps tell a common enlarged prostate apart from something that needs further investigation. Our GP goes through your result with you and explains what it means.
- Total Prostate Specific Antigen (Total PSA)
- Free Prostate Specific Antigen (Free PSA)
- Free-to-total PSA ratio (calculated from the two results)
Symptoms that prompt a prostate check
Many men book a PSA test because of changes to how they pass urine, which become more common with age.
- Getting up at night to urinate
- A weak or slow urine flow
- Needing to go more often or more urgently
- Difficulty starting, or a feeling the bladder is not fully empty
Who it is for
- Men over 50
- Men over 45 with a family history of prostate cancer
- Men with urinary symptoms who want answers or reassurance
- Anyone who has been meaning to get a prostate check and wants it done quickly
What your PSA result can mean
PSA can rise for reasons other than cancer, including an enlarged prostate, a recent infection, or even vigorous exercise or cycling shortly before the test. Measuring free as well as total PSA, and the ratio between them, helps tell a common enlarged prostate apart from something that needs a closer look. The GP takes all of this into account and explains clearly whether your result is reassuring or whether further checks are sensible.
