A clinical referral is required before booking a private ultrasound scan. This can be a referral from your own GP, an NHS GP, or any outside clinician, or you can book an appointment with our internal GP first, who can provide the referral for you.

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to build a real-time picture of the organs, tissues and blood flow inside the body. A small handheld probe is moved over the skin with a little gel, and the echoes are turned into images on a screen.

Because it uses sound rather than radiation, ultrasound is completely safe and can be repeated as often as needed. It is often the first-line test for abdominal and pelvic pain, lumps and swellings, and many joint and soft-tissue problems.

1. Book your scan. Choose the area to be scanned. We will explain any simple preparation, such as a full bladder for a pelvic scan.
2. Your scan. A small probe with gel is moved gently over the skin. It is painless and takes between 10 and 30 minutes.
3. Results on the day. Your findings are explained straight away, and you receive a written report along with advice on any next steps.
