Why have a mole removed?

People ask us to remove moles for two broad reasons: because a mole is changing or causing concern, or because of how it looks and feels. Both are valid reasons to book an assessment. A mole that is catching on clothing or a razor, sitting somewhere prominent, or knocking your confidence can be removed once a clinician has examined it. Where there is any clinical concern, assessment always comes first.

When should a mole be checked?

Please book an assessment if you notice any of the following. This is not a diagnosis — it is a prompt to get it looked at properly.

• A mole that is getting bigger or changing shape
• An irregular or ragged border
• More than one colour, or a change in colour
• Itching, bleeding, crusting or soreness
• A new mole appearing in adulthood
• A mole that looks different from your others

The procedure

• Carried out under local anaesthetic
• The mole is excised, or shave-excised where suitable, depending on type and site
• The wound is closed and dressed; stitches may be used
• Tissue is sent for histology where clinically indicated

Aftercare and results

• You go home the same day with written aftercare advice
• Where tissue is sent for testing, results are discussed with you
• Follow-up is arranged if needed

Moles on the face need particular care because the cosmetic result matters as much as the removal itself. Your clinician will discuss the likely appearance afterwards, the method best suited to the site, and how to care for the area while it heals to give the best chance of a discreet result.

Will mole removal leave a scar?

Any procedure that breaks the skin can leave a mark. The likely result depends on the size and depth of the mole, its position, the removal method and how you heal. Your clinician will talk this through honestly with you before you decide.
