Most men experience little to no pain during the procedure. Local anaesthetic is used to completely numb the area beforehand. You may feel some mild pressure or tugging, but significant discomfort is uncommon. Any soreness afterwards is usually mild and settles within a few days.

The procedure itself typically takes 15–30 minutes. You'll be able to go home the same day.

Most men return to desk-based work within 2–3 days. Physical labour or strenuous exercise should be avoided for around a week. Sexual activity can usually resume after 7 days.

Yes. A vasectomy should be considered a permanent decision. While reversal procedures exist, they are complex, not always successful, and not routinely available on the NHS. We recommend only proceeding if you are certain you do not want biological children in the future.

What if I change my mind afterwards? Vasectomy reversal is possible but should not be relied upon. Success rates decrease the longer after the original procedure it is performed. We strongly encourage careful consideration and open discussion with your partner before proceeding.

No. It takes a period of time, usually around 8–12 weeks or 20 ejaculations, before the procedure is confirmed effective. A follow-up semen test is carried out to confirm success. Contraception must continue to be used until clearance is confirmed.

Not at all. A vasectomy does not affect testosterone levels, sex drive, erections, orgasm, or ejaculation. The only difference is that semen will no longer contain sperm.

The no-scalpel technique is very safe with a low complication rate. Possible but uncommon risks include mild bruising, temporary swelling, or in rare cases a small lump called a sperm granuloma. Serious complications are rare. Your clinician will discuss all risks with you at your consultation.

We advise wearing snug, supportive underwear on the day. Showering beforehand is recommended. Avoid taking blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen in the days before unless prescribed for another condition — your clinician will advise you fully at consultation.
