A FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide) test measures the level of inflammation in your airways using a simple breath sample. It is a quick, painless and increasingly important tool for diagnosing asthma and checking how well treatment is working.
What a FeNO test shows
When the airways are inflamed, as they often are in asthma, they produce more nitric oxide. A FeNO test measures the amount of this gas in the air you breathe out, giving an objective indication of airway inflammation.
A higher reading can support a diagnosis of asthma and suggest that inflammation is not yet fully controlled, which helps guide treatment and can be tracked over time.
Do you need a referral for a FeNO test?
A GP referral is required for a FeNO test. If you already have one, bring it along. If not, you can book a referral appointment with our internal GP or respiratory consultant first.
Pricing
Pricing depends on your referral status and the package needed: a FeNO test alone with an existing referral is £50; a suspected-asthma assessment (spirometry and FeNO together) is from £150; and a suspected-COPD package is from £180. Patients without a referral can book one with our internal GP or respiratory consultant, and the respiratory consultant may also refer a patient on for this test.

The test, step by step
- Simple preparation. Where advised, avoid heavy exercise and certain foods and drinks just before your test, as these can affect the reading.
- Your breath sample. You breathe out steadily into a handheld device for around ten seconds. It is completely painless and non-invasive.
- Results and advice. Your reading is explained straight away, along with what it means and any next steps, with referral to a respiratory consultant if you need one.
