What is gout and why does it happen

Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood, which can form sharp, needle-like crystals in a joint. This triggers a sudden attack of severe pain, swelling, heat and redness, most often in the big toe, but also the foot, ankle, knee, hand or wrist.

A gout attack can come on rapidly, often overnight. Attacks usually settle over a week or two, but without treatment they tend to return and can become more frequent. The good news is that gout is one of the most treatable forms of arthritis.

1. Consultant assessment. A specialist reviews your history, examines the affected joint and confirms the diagnosis.
2. Tests. We can arrange a uric acid blood test and, where helpful, an ultrasound of the joint to confirm gout and guide treatment.
3. Treatment and prevention. We settle the flare, then agree a long-term plan that may include medication to lower uric acid, along with diet and lifestyle advice.
