About This Service

Spirometry and Lung Function Test in Lurgan
Spirometry is a lung function test that measures how much air you can breathe out and how quickly. It is the standard way to check for asthma and COPD and to look into unexplained breathlessness. At our Lurgan clinic the test can lead straight into a Respiratory Consultant consultation where needed, so you get a diagnosis and a plan rather than just a set of numbers.

What spirometry measures

You breathe into a mouthpiece as instructed, and the device records how your lungs are performing. The key measurements tell a clinician a great deal about how your airways are working.
  • FEV1, the amount of air you can force out in one second
  • FVC, the total amount of air you can force out
  • The FEV1 to FVC ratio, which helps tell asthma and COPD apart

Why have a lung function test

  • Breathlessness you want explained
  • A suspected diagnosis of asthma or COPD
  • Monitoring a known lung condition
  • A long standing cough or wheeze
  • Reassurance if you are a current or former smoker

The consultant pathway

Spirometry gives the numbers, but the interpretation is what matters. Where needed, your result leads into a Respiratory Consultant consultation (£225), so an expert can confirm a diagnosis and set out a treatment plan. This means you are not left holding a printout you cannot read. You get a clear explanation and a route forward in one place.

Spirometry and FeNO together

Spirometry measures airflow and lung capacity, while a FeNO test measures the inflammation linked to asthma. The two are often used together, because they look at different parts of the picture. We can advise if both would help.

Preparing for your test

A few simple things help the test run smoothly, such as avoiding a heavy meal, vigorous exercise and smoking shortly beforehand, and wearing loose clothing. If you use an inhaler, we will advise whether to take it as normal or to hold it before the test. We confirm all of this when you book.

How it works

  1. Book the spirometry test online.
  2. Attend the Lurgan clinic for the test, which takes a short time.
  3. A clinician guides you through the breathing measurements.
  4. Your results are reviewed, with a Respiratory Consultant consultation where needed.
  5. You receive your results and a clear plan.
