Semaglutide mimics a natural gut hormone called GLP-1, which is released when you eat. It helps you feel fuller for longer, reduces appetite and lowers how much you eat. Within a structured programme, this can support steady, sustainable weight loss. Wegovy is given as a once-weekly injection.
Who Might Wegovy Be Suitable For?
Treatment is considered only for adults who meet clinical criteria, usually based on BMI and any weight-related health conditions, and only after a full assessment. Your clinician will review your medical history, current medicines and goals to decide whether it is appropriate for you.
Wegovy vs Mounjaro vs Ozempic
Wegovy (semaglutide) acts on one hormone pathway, while Mounjaro (tirzepatide) acts on two. Ozempic also contains semaglutide but is licensed for type 2 diabetes rather than weight loss. The right choice depends on your individual health, and is always a decision for your clinician.
Side Effects and Safety
Like all medicines, semaglutide can cause side effects, most commonly digestive ones such as nausea, which often settle over time. A full contraindication screen is completed before any prescription, and you are monitored at every review.
