Yes. All minor surgical procedures at Friends Medical Service are carried out under local anaesthetic. This means the area being treated is numbed before the procedure begins, so you should not feel any pain during the treatment itself. You may feel some mild pressure or sensation but nothing sharp or uncomfortable.

A useful way to check a mole is to use the ABCDE method. Look for Asymmetry, irregular Border, uneven Colour, a Diameter larger than 6mm, and whether it is Evolving or changing. If a mole displays any of these features, or if it bleeds, itches, or crusts, you should have it assessed by a doctor without delay.

In some cases, particularly where there is any uncertainty about the nature of a lesion, the removed tissue will be sent to a laboratory for histology. This confirms whether the lesion is benign or requires any further treatment. Your doctor will advise you at your consultation whether histology is recommended in your case.

Moles that have been fully excised do not usually return. In cases where a mole is shaved rather than fully excised, there is a small possibility that some pigment cells may remain and the mole could gradually reappear over time. Your doctor will advise on the most appropriate removal method based on your individual case.
