A clinical referral is required before booking a guided cortisone injection. This can be a referral from your own GP, an NHS GP, or any outside clinician, or you can book an appointment with our internal GP first, who can provide the referral for you.

Injecting without imaging relies on surface landmarks and feel alone, and even in experienced hands does not always reach the intended target. With ultrasound guidance, your consultant radiologist sees the needle, the joint or tendon, and the surrounding structures in real time.

That means the medicine is delivered precisely into the right space, which can improve how well the injection works and how long the relief lasts. Accurate placement also tends to be more comfortable.

1. Assessment. Your consultant radiologist examines the area, reviews your history and confirms that a guided injection is right for you.
2. The injection. The skin is cleaned and the injection is placed under live ultrasound. It usually takes just a few minutes.
3. Aftercare. You are given clear aftercare advice. Many people feel the benefit within a few days.

Guided injections suit people with ongoing joint or soft-tissue pain that has not settled with rest, activity change or physiotherapy. A cortisone injection is not a cure, but it can provide meaningful relief that lasts from several weeks to several months.
